Event Overview

The Scala Foundation is pleased to announce that the 2023 Scala Conference—Art, the Sacred, and the Common Good: Renewing Culture through Beauty, Education and Worship—will take place from April 21-22 2023 at the Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, New Jersey. Three confirmed keynote speakers are the author Andy Crouch and artists Jonathan Pageau and iconographer Aidan Hart.

As with Scala’s previous conferences, this event will bring together scholars, culture creators, educators, religious leaders and students to ponder the challenges and opportunities in connecting art, the sacred and our shared lives and stories. Recovering an appreciation of true beauty is vital to recovering from the division, confusion and hopelessness that ails us.

Our goal is to show how traditions in beauty, education and worship, although under threat, are indeed being renewed. Attendees at this event will have the opportunity to meet internationally renowned artists and prestigious scholars; experience beautiful sacred music, art, and architecture; learn why beauty is essential to personal happiness and civic participation; be inspired by educators who form virtues through beauty; and build community with people pursuing the way of beauty.

The conference begins with a dinner and keynote lecture on Friday night, followed by a full day on Saturday of keynote addresses, panels, and breakout sessions with speakers. Attendees will also have the chance to participate in chorale prayer for liturgy of the hours, to see an exhibit of archives of sacred texts from Princeton Theological Seminary, and see the art of our speakers and local artists. Registration can be for Saturday only, or both Friday and Saturday, and includes meals for the day(s) for which one registers. We anticipate registration launching in December 2022.
