Event Overview

Is the human desire for beauty a romantic fantasy that eludes us? Or is our desire for beauty a longing that can shape our practical, everyday lives? In this webinar, the Professors Harne and Mooney Suarez will discuss why thinkers like John Henry Newman, Jacques Maritain and Etienne Gilson thought the human longing for beauty was at the core of a learned life and a happy life. Why has experiencing beauty become difficult in the modern world? Does one have to make beautiful things (art, poetry, or music) in order to experience the power of beauty? Or can one find beauty in everyday manual labor (like the Benedictines) or in science, mathematics and other professions?
