Event Overview

The witness of St. Benedict continues to teach and inspire people even 1500 years after his passing. Some see in his story many parallels with our own age, and have attempted to use it to construct a response to the “collapse” of Western culture. Although some portray monasticism as a retreat from society, it’s important to understand how Benedictine monks throughout history have allowed their charism to inform their engagement with society in new and spiritually-refreshing ways. The monks of Newark Abbey and St. Benedict’s Preparatory School provide an example of how Benedictines can engage with and bring renewal to postmodern society. They discuss these ideas in their panel, “Discovering the ‘Benedict Option’ in the City: A Panel on Urban Education.”

This event is free and open to the public. Those arriving by car can park in the William Street lot, which is just after the intersection with Dr. MLK Jr. Blvd. Those arriving by public transportation can enter through the “520 door” on Dr. MLK Jr. Blvd. Student volunteers will direct you to the school library.
