Mary Ellen Konieczny

Associate Professor of Sociology, University of Notre Dame

Mary Ellen Konieczny was Associate Professor of Sociology and Henkels Family Collegiate Chair and a Faculty Fellow at the Center for the Study of Religion and Society at the University of Notre Dame. Her scholarship focused primarily on religion, culture, politics, family, and social theory.

Professor Konieczny was the author of The Spirit’s Tether: Family, Work, and Religion among American Catholics (2013), and the lead editor of Polarization in the U.S. Catholic Church: Naming the Wounds, Beginning to Heal (2016). Professor Konieczny’s research was been supported by grants and fellowships from the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, the Louisville Institute, and the University of Chicago. She has been a fellow at the Cushwa Center for the Study of American Catholicism at Notre Dame and the Yale Institute for the Advanced Study of Religion.

She passed away suddenly in February 2018, and embodied of the kind of students Scala aims to form — educator, scholar, mentor, mother, wife, servant of the church and friend of everyone.
